this is not hyperbole, this is my favorite recipe yet as a ball® canning ambassador. unsweetened, cinnamon spiced pears. it really exemplifies the idea that simple is best. three ingredients: unsweetened apple juice, fresh pears + a cinnamon stick. okay four, because I used lemon juice to keep the pears from browning. but that’s it, uncomplicated, wholesome + delicious.

I was suspect after making this recipe, as I often am still suscpicious of things I try/make/do/listen to for the first time as a taurus. also the pears are not that appealing in a jar, but let me tell you, these are not your canned pears from middle school. they are unassuming + surprisingly delightful.

i’m super excited to share this recipe for you. a nourishing treat for you + your kiddos, a simple yet elegant dessert at a dinner party or shoving them in your face when your looking for a midnight snack to satisfy your sweet tooth, these will not disappoint.

Let’s get to it: here is your Ball® Canning tested and approved recipe and Ball® Flute Jars

Cinnamon Spiced Pears

What you’ll need:

Ball® Glass Flute Jars

Water Bath Canner

1 - 1 1/2 lbs of pears (about 3-5 pears) per pint

Unsweetened Apple Juice

Cinnamon Sticks one per pint jar

Optional: Fresh of Bottle Lemon Juice

Directions

Prepare your boiling water canner. Heat jars in simmering water until ready for use. Do not boil. Wash lids in warm soapy water and set bands aside.

Wash pears. Drain. Peel pears, core them and cut into halves. If desired, treat with Ball® fruit fresh or lemon juice to prevent browning.

Cover pears in water and cook in a pan on the stovetop, one layer at a time until heated throughout. In a separate pan, heat apple juice to a boil.

Pack the hot pears tightly, cavity side down, into hot jars leaving 1/2-inch headspace. Place 1 cinnamon stick in each jar.

ladle hot apple juice over pears leaving 1/2-inch headspace*. Remove air bubbles. Wipe rim. Center hot lid on Ball® Pint Jar. Apply band and adjust until fingertip tight. Place jar in boiling water canner. Repeat until all jars are filled.

process jars in the water bath canner for 20 minutes, adjusting for altitude. Turn off heat; remove lid and let jars stand 5 minutes. Remove Ball® and cool. Check for seal after 24 hours. Lids should not flex up and down when center is pressed.

Like I said above, I was suspect of this recipe, but they are so delectable. We’ve been enjoying these straight out of the jar or as an after dinner treat topped with chopped pecans, maple sweetened whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon. All refined sugar free goodness.

Maple Sweetened Whipped Cream

Pour a half pint of organic whipping cream into a big Ball® jar. add a tablespoon or two of maple syrup, a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. Pull out your smart stick blender with whisk attachment and whisk until soft peaks form. Store with a Ball® l Jar Storage Lid. That simple + delicious.
